Top 5 things to do on your Easter break

If you want to get out and about during your Easter Break, then TLH Leisure Resort in Torquay is ideally located for some of the West Country’s best local attractions.

A great favourite is Paignton Zoo - within a five mile drive of TLH - and one of the country’s top environmental parks. Paignton Zoo is home to thousands of amazing animals and plants - in a single visit you can visit the desert, cross the savannah, explore the forest and trek through the tropics - whew! And I don’t know if anyone remembers watching the webcam progress of Zuri the black rhino who was born last year, but she is now just turned one year old and getting to be quite a big girl!

Just a short walk from TLH Leisure Resort is Living Coasts - right next to Torquay harbour - you can’t miss it as you’ll see the black netted canopy from quite a way off. This world class aquatic centre is home to some fantastic sea birds, penguins and seals. It’s great if you go to the underground viewing centre - the seals especially are real show-offs and it almost feels as if you could touch them. During the Easter holidays you can hunt for the golden egg and maybe get the chance to actually feed the seals and penguins yourself. Why not take a look at their website to get a sneak preview of what’s in store.

The next “must see” on your list is the fascinating Model Village in Babbacombe - just a short bus ride away, or 10 minutes in the car. I’ve been a fan of the village for years and every year it just keeps getting better. There are thousands of miniature models and figures, plus a 4D theatre, Silvers Model Circus, Model Railways - and for a unique gift you can even shrink your friends or relatives!!

Taking you back in time, did you know that Kent’s Cavern in Torquay is the oldest recognisable human dwelling in the British Isles! These ancient underground caverns go back 2 1/2 million years - you’ll get to see the most amazing stalactites and stalagmites and in the visitors centre you’ll see hand axes dating back 500,000 years, as well as an upper jaw bone believed to be the oldest human remains in Europe.

Last but not least - if you’re a bit of a culture vulture - Torquay was the home of international crime writer, Agatha Christie. You can visit the Agatha Christie Gallery at Torquay Museum where a fascinating display tells the story of her life. Greenway Gardens, which was the family’s Summer estate, is now owned by the National Trust, with a spectacular botanical collection on the banks of the river Dart.  The house is due to open to the public this year following a period of restoration. If you want more information about Agatha Christie, then you can take a look at the English Riviera Tourist Board’s website. You’ll also find information about loads more attractions and activities in the area too.

And don’t forget - after an exciting day out and about, you can get back to the comfort and relaxation of the Derwent, Victoria, Carlton or Toorak Hotels at TLH Leisure Resort.
